16th annual luncheon event kicks off in February 2016
Calgary – Award-winning broadcast journalist Lisa LaFlamme will share stories with a Calgary audience about her career which has put her at the centre of some of the biggest news stories of the past two decades.
LaFlamme is the keynote speaker kicking off the Enbridge Famous 5 Speakers Series on Feb. 12, 2016 at Calgary’s Fairmont Palliser Hotel.
With a long list of journalism awards to her credit, LaFlamme has been the face of CTV News since 2011 as Chief Anchor and Senior Editor. Among her many accolades, for the second consecutive year she was named Best News Anchor at the Canadian Screen Awards in March 2015. She also scooped the prestigious 2014 Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTDNA) Bert Canning Award for Best Network Television Newscast, the third time she received the recognition since becoming anchor.
“Lisa is a role model who will inspire many with her exemplary leadership and success, which makes her an ideal woman to headline our 2016 Speaker Series,” said Carolyn Robertson, Famous 5 Foundation chair.
LaFlamme's career has been an inspiration to many young women who aspire to become journalists. She has conducted exclusive interviews with pivotal world leaders and her work has put her at the centre of many important international events.
In the course of her career, LaFlamme has reported on wars, elections and natural disasters, sometimes from dangerous locations: in the aftermath of the tsunami in South Asia; in Haiti after the devastating earthquake and ensuing political turmoil. She has also reported extensively on Canada's mission in Afghanistan and the humanitarian crisis involving the Afghan people.
LaFlamme is also involved in several volunteer organizations. She is ambassador of PLAN International, travelling to remote areas to promote child rights and to end poverty around the world. Another cause near to her heart is training young journalists in conflict-ridden zones. She travelled in 2013 with Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) to the Democratic Republic of Congo to help mentor new journalists in the midst of a conflict zone.
The Famous 5 Foundation Enbridge Speaker Series profiles the inspiring leadership journeys of trailblazing Canadian women. Rounding out the lineup for 2016 will be dynamic and engaging presentations from community development leader Lois Sapsford, teen advocate Mackenzie Murphy, entrepreneur Jennifer Carlson and Madam Justice Sheilah Martin.
