As part of the vision for Calgary's Olympic Plaza transformation, is the goal of creating an arts-focused gathering space in the downtown core. At this time, there is no certainty that the 'Women Are Persons!' monument will remain in place as part of this vision.

For 25 years, this larger-than-life bronze tribute to Alberta's Famous 5 has stood in Olympic Plaza, near Calgary City Hall. It is a legacy to courage, tenacity and the belief that we are all 'persons'. It is a tribute to the 'Persons' Case verdict announced October 18, 1929. At the time of its installation it was part of the largest public art project in Canada and it was designed and funded entirely by women! We believe that it is vital that this tribute to the Famous 5 remain in Olympic Plaza and that it stands as a permanent reminder to the principle of equality for all and to inspire future generations of leaders. Let's stand up for the five Alberta women who stood up for all 'persons'!

The F5 Maquette is a miniature of the F5F’s Women are Persons! Monuments in Olympic Plaza in Calgary and in front of the Senate of Canada in Ottawa. They were designed by Barbara Paterson and created by Bronzart Foundry.

“trailblazers tour” of alberta!

The Famous 5 are on a tour of the province where they made history! The Famous 5 Maquette “Trailblazers Tour” will introduce Albertans to these provincial heroes and inspire the next generation of trailblazers to be leaders and nation builders! The tour kicked off in the Town of Okotoks - our thanks to Mayor Tanya Thorn for an incredible welcome! Next stop on the tour: High River, AB!

This self-guided tour of the maquette of the ‘Women Are Persons!’ monument will be on display at the High River Library from April 1 - 30th (during library hours; no cost to visit). Residents of High River are invited to meet the gutsy, resilient women from Alberta who secured the right for women to vote, seek elected office and serve as Senators. The F5 challenged the highest court to secure the first, international legal declaration of the principle of equality. Their efforts also contributed to Canada’s Constitution becoming a ‘Living Tree’ for the future. Because of their courage, Women Are Persons!

This tour is made possible with the support of the Alberta Government, Dept. of Arts, Culture & Status of Women.

Watch for details as the Famous 5 visit Claresholm, Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and beyond!
